Time to Tee Up! Nine options for golfing on and off Aquidneck Island

by Candice Sandman

Got the itch to go out on the course now that the weather has turned? We’ve listed the local courses, and a distinguishing characteristic or two of each. And, lucky us, there are a few rainy-day options—indoor virtual courses!

Aquidneck Club

25 Cory’s Lane • Portsmouth, RI 02871 • 401-682-6000

This is a private club, so to play golf you’ll need to connect with a member. Let us know if we can put you in touch with membership at the club. They offer both golf and social memberships. The 18-hole Scottish links golf course is consistently listed in the top 100 private courses in the country.

Jamestown Golf Course

245 Conanicus Avenue • Jamestown, RI 02835 • (401) 423-9930

This nine-hole course is famous for its friendly island regulars. The course is always in good shape and—maybe more importantly—they have the best burger at the 19th (Technically the 10th)!

Newport National Golf Club

324 Mitchell’s Lane • Middletown, RI 02842 • (401) 848-9690

A semi-private course. Could be the most challenging course in RI, and top in New England, but several different tee set ups make it enjoyable for professionals as well as hackers. Memberships are available; see website for info.

Newport Country Club

280 Harrison Avenue • Newport, RI 02840

This is a private club. You’ll need to find a member with whom to play. Founded 126 years ago in 1893, it hosted both the first U.S. Amateur Championship and the first U.S. Open in 1895. It will be the host of the U.S. Senior Open in June 2020

Green Valley Country Club

371 Union Street • Portsmouth, RI 02871 • (401) 847-9543

Another semi-private course, this 18-hole championship course is open to the public. Preserved by the Aquidneck Land Trust, this course is always fun, and it has elevation changes, great greens, and a fantastic restaurant and event center.

Montaup Country Club

500 Anthony Road • Portsmouth, RI 02871 • (401) 683-0955

Arguably the most difficult first hole you may find in the state, Montaup is always in terrific shape and has some great golf holes right on Mount Hope Bay.

Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club

152 Browns Lane • Middletown, RI 02842 • (401) 847-5141

Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club is a private club, so you’ll need to play with a member. The 18-hole classics links-style course was designed by famed golf-course architect Seth Raynor in the “sea coast” style of open fields and few trees. It provides an always-changing view of Narragansett Bay’s East Passage. Golf and social memberships available. Let us know if we can put you in touch with membership.

Indoor Options

Infinite Golf

796 Aquidneck Avenue • Unit A • Middletown, RI 02842 • (401) 619-8220

There are only two bays, making for an intimate experience. Great for two foursomes to play virtual golf.

Newport Indoor Golf

1947 West Main Road • Portsmouth, RI 02871 • (401) 847-1947

Rainy weather—and we’ve had plenty of that lately—got you down? Not here, where can reserve a spot online to play one of 30 courses virtually. Fun off-season or rainy day alternate to getting out on the real turf.
